From Hyperlinks to Hyperwords
26th of June, 2008. London
Let's say you come across something interesting on a web page. Maybe the name of a movie. However you cannot remember the year it was released or what actors stared in it. And you want to know.
To use any of the numerous resources on the web like the Internet Movie Database you would have to copy the name of the movie, load Internet Movie Database by typing in its web address or by selecting it from your bookmarks or favorites. Then you find the search field, paste the name of the movie and hit enter.
Of course, if someone has provided a hyperlink from the movie's name to the database then that would be great. But what if you preferred to look the movie up in Wikipedia or do a Google search on it? In that case it would be back to copying and opening the web page & pasting.
Links only go to one destination, the destination the author decided on.
But that is with the current way of looking at things: interactive hyperlinks and barely-interactive words.
However, the Web is not all about hyperlinks, you can also have Hyperwords so that all the words become interactive.
This page already has Hyperwords activated so try this:
1) Select any word on the page.
2) You will get a menu.
3) Choose a command.
For example, select James Bond and choose ‘Reference’ and then ‘Movie Database’ from the menu. Or 'Wikipedia'. Or choose 'Search' & 'Google'.
Select Singapore and choose 'Reference'/'Wikipedia'. Or Guardian Online and 'Go'/'Google top search result'. You can even select $200 and convert it to British pounds 's if you like.
You are welcome to activate Hyperwords for your Web browser for free at Hyperwords.net so that you can interact in useful ways with all the words on the Web.
This is a research project and your feedback is actively encouraged.
